Out of the mouths of babes

Today was a busy day. I baby-sat my niece and nephew. We had a good day. We went to the beach, plus the highlight (for them); they got to meet my two cats who have just arrived in New Zealand from Australia.

This was the first time that Penzance and Tui had met little kiddies - and if I am honest, I think they were not too impressed.  For a start, my niece has one volume - loud. So when I said to her that we needed to be quiet so we don't scare them, she said (loudly): "Look there is Tui, come here Tui!" At which point Tui ran and hid under the bed. Penzance was a wee bit more social and let the kids pat him.

We then went to the beach and after that came back for another cuddle. This time Tui obliged and Penzance hid under the bed. I suspect they had made a deal that they need to take turns at being the sacrificial lamb when the kids come over.

Tui, Penzance and I are all settling into my friends house. As I mentioned the other day - they are a wonderful couple who are dear friends and are welcoming me into their very busy and full household. They have four kids, two cats plus three adults living in the house, and have welcomed me and my two cats. How is that for generous hearts!!!

It is funny living with kids. They are adorably honest with their comments - to date I have been told I have a big belly and asked why my boobs are bigger than their mummy's. How does one answer that? My approach has been to agree that I do have a big belly and explain that we are all different, so we all have different bodies. What I really wanted to say was....well I probably can't type it here and I have to remember that it is a four year old who is providing this feedback and has not yet learnt about "no go" areas in conversation. I have however made a mental note to find my minimiser bra and cut back on carbs for a few days.

Anyway, I am having fun and loving being closer to my family. Makes me feel very happy about the decision to move home.

Picture of an 11 year olds desk

Grace has her desk in the family room, mainly due to space in her room but also to help her not lock herself away. She just finished tidying it and I love how it represents where she is at. Lots of art, Lego still displayed proudly, pillow on chair covering her phone ( she is still adhering to the no phone in her room rule, yay!), pottery on display. A beautiful blend of child and teenager!

Everyone is growing up

Turning 50 is a weird milestone - I dont feel 50, and I dont really put a lot of weight behind milestone numbers. But I do like reflecting on life, and I feel I have grown, learnt from many of my mistakes, and lived a pretty great life. The biggest change is watching just how much Grace has grown this year. Today I washed some of her baby clothes that I found so I can store them and it took me right back to when my whole clothes line had tiny little outfits on it. This year, she everything has changed and I am in so much grief for the loss of some of the old routines, it hurts!!  She is still my little button and I see that side of her when she is unsure or overwhelmed. I need to manage my patience through these growing phases, as my sister said "give her space and grace". She is the kindest, funniest and sweetest girl and I love her so much that it honestly hurts. I hope she knows that. She seems to have all my worst moments front of mind that I wonder at times if she sees ...
