Supermarkets

There is something about going to a supermarket in a new country that spells adventure to me. Okay, I appreciate that I obviously don't have a high risk sense of adventure, but I really think it is exciting to stroll up and down the aisles and discover new things. Of course the novelty wears off fast, and all subsequent visits are painful, but the first visit is special.

Anyway, today I did my first full grocery shop in NZ. It was great. As usual I wrote a list and as usual I forgot to get a lot of things on it. I did spend an unusually long amount of time in my two favourite aisles - the alcohol section and the ice cream freezers. In Aus, you can't buy alcohol in a supermarket. It is a pain but you get used to it. I now remember how much I love NZ supermarkets with their large selection of wine and beer. I have brought home some Isaac's Cider, and I am enjoying a bottle now - delicious!

My other favourite aisle is the ice cream freezers. Alas I was only able to browse this trip as my fridge/freezer has not arrived and short of eating the ice cream immediately, I have no facilities to store it. So instead I have made a mental list of the products I must try over the next few months.

I also bought 15 light bulbs. I have not yet started to install them, and after a bottle of cider it is probably not the best plan to climb a ladder - so that job can wait till tomorrow.

Speaking of which, tomorrow is the continuation of house painting, which was started on Friday.  I managed to get more paint on myself than on the walls, including getting some on my shoulder.

Given I was wearing a t-shirt which covered my shoulders, I am not sure how this happened.

Picture of an 11 year olds desk

Grace has her desk in the family room, mainly due to space in her room but also to help her not lock herself away. She just finished tidying it and I love how it represents where she is at. Lots of art, Lego still displayed proudly, pillow on chair covering her phone ( she is still adhering to the no phone in her room rule, yay!), pottery on display. A beautiful blend of child and teenager!

Everyone is growing up

Turning 50 is a weird milestone - I dont feel 50, and I dont really put a lot of weight behind milestone numbers. But I do like reflecting on life, and I feel I have grown, learnt from many of my mistakes, and lived a pretty great life. The biggest change is watching just how much Grace has grown this year. Today I washed some of her baby clothes that I found so I can store them and it took me right back to when my whole clothes line had tiny little outfits on it. This year, she everything has changed and I am in so much grief for the loss of some of the old routines, it hurts!!  She is still my little button and I see that side of her when she is unsure or overwhelmed. I need to manage my patience through these growing phases, as my sister said "give her space and grace". She is the kindest, funniest and sweetest girl and I love her so much that it honestly hurts. I hope she knows that. She seems to have all my worst moments front of mind that I wonder at times if she sees ...
