As I have mentioned before, the most annoying thing about anxiety is that it often starts from a place of reality. The stuff that is going on with Covid-19 is a great example. Yes there are legitimate reasons to be concerned BUT for someone prone to an anxiety, this measured concern can so quickly spiral into full blown and debilitating anxiety.
The last few days I have been stuck at home with a cold. Normally I would soldier on through the cold, but talking with my boss we agreed it is best to stay home, after all no one wants to sit next to a sniffling coughing colleague right now!
I really thought I could keep perspective through all of this but I felt the anxiety coming on earlier this week. I have tried to talk myself through things and focus on being logical, but yesterday it all spiralled. At times like this I hate my brain. I hate that I am so triggered by things that are a) out of my control and b) may impact my family. My reaction is text book!
However, I have a tool kit of resources to help me navigate my anxiety. It doesn't make the feelings "in the moment" feel any less uncomfortable but it does help as I know I will get through it.
I can't solve Covid-19, I can't stop how fast it spreads or who it impacts. But I can do my best to stay safe, and keep calm. So take a deep breath, remember that a pandemic describes a disease’s ‘spread’ not its severity, and remember that life is good and there are always positive things to focus on.
