Her name was Elaine Pandilovski

When I lived in Melbourne we worked together and became friends. I remember her journey with IVF and following that the joyful news that she was pregnant.

I attended Thomas's christening and his first birthday. I hung out with Elaine and her husband Zoran. They were warm and welcoming. They had been together since high school. They seemed so happy.

When I moved back to New Zealand, Elaine and I stayed in touch. Distance meant the friendship softened, but we shared each others milestones and enjoyed seeing our families grow.

Yesterday, I found out she had been murdered.

On Tuesday, her husband took her life in a senseless act of violence. He hid her body in the house and drove across Melbourne. He then rammed a car, hurting two strangers, in an attempt to kill himself.

Elaine's family looked for her on Tuesday. They called the police her found her body late Tuesday night.

On Wednesday I was enjoying a day off with Grace. I checked into Facebook and read the news.

Abuse is gradual. It starts small. So small that it becomes normal to the victim. They learn to live with it, to hide it, accept it.  And then it escalates. Elaine had apparently recently left Zoran and he had moved out. And yet she was still not safe.

I like logic, I like things being fair. My brain can't make sense of this. I feel so sad and so naive that I thought this doesnt happen to my friends. But it can. And it has.

Rest in peace Elaine. I will remember your grace and warmth. I will remember you.

Picture of an 11 year olds desk

Grace has her desk in the family room, mainly due to space in her room but also to help her not lock herself away. She just finished tidying it and I love how it represents where she is at. Lots of art, Lego still displayed proudly, pillow on chair covering her phone ( she is still adhering to the no phone in her room rule, yay!), pottery on display. A beautiful blend of child and teenager!

Everyone is growing up

Turning 50 is a weird milestone - I dont feel 50, and I dont really put a lot of weight behind milestone numbers. But I do like reflecting on life, and I feel I have grown, learnt from many of my mistakes, and lived a pretty great life. The biggest change is watching just how much Grace has grown this year. Today I washed some of her baby clothes that I found so I can store them and it took me right back to when my whole clothes line had tiny little outfits on it. This year, she everything has changed and I am in so much grief for the loss of some of the old routines, it hurts!!  She is still my little button and I see that side of her when she is unsure or overwhelmed. I need to manage my patience through these growing phases, as my sister said "give her space and grace". She is the kindest, funniest and sweetest girl and I love her so much that it honestly hurts. I hope she knows that. She seems to have all my worst moments front of mind that I wonder at times if she sees ...
