Tsunamis and lockdowns - what next??

Goodness 2021 is throwing as many challenges at us as 2020 did! Today's earthquakes and resulting tsunami warning was hard on my work team, with one working up north in the danger area and another whose parents live there. Thankfully all passed without incident.

We finish the week waiting for the 4pm announcement which we assume will say our week long lock down will end tomorrow. One part of me wants it to continue to be safe (I think the government are prioritising the economy over public health) but the other part will be happy to get back to routine, especially getting Grace back to school.

The hard part about this years yo-yo-ing in and out of lockdown means that we are constantly having to change plans. We were planning on having a friends birthday party soon for Grace but its hard to get motivated and be okay with the fact we may have to cancel at the last minute. But I guess that is the reality of life in a pandemic!

Other than that I am trying to look after my mental health, have bought myself another small doll house to build to help keep me creating and keep my mind busy. I just need to "reclaim" my study from the disaster it has become with Grace and I working from home together.

I do have to give credit to my wee girl - it is hard for an only child who has a Mum who has to work full time. She has been amazing and by in large stayed up beat and resilient. I still fear her learning is suffering but we are doing our best with bursts of sessions and online tutoring. I just have to have faith that it will all work out, and we are raising a strong, kind and creative girl and that is more important than being top of the class.

Roll on next week and hopefully FREEDOM!!

Everyone is growing up

Turning 50 is a weird milestone - I dont feel 50, and I dont really put a lot of weight behind milestone numbers. But I do like reflecting on life, and I feel I have grown, learnt from many of my mistakes, and lived a pretty great life. The biggest change is watching just how much Grace has grown this year. Today I washed some of her baby clothes that I found so I can store them and it took me right back to when my whole clothes line had tiny little outfits on it. This year, she everything has changed and I am in so much grief for the loss of some of the old routines, it hurts!!  She is still my little button and I see that side of her when she is unsure or overwhelmed. I need to manage my patience through these growing phases, as my sister said "give her space and grace". She is the kindest, funniest and sweetest girl and I love her so much that it honestly hurts. I hope she knows that. She seems to have all my worst moments front of mind that I wonder at times if she sees ...

Picture of an 11 year olds desk

Grace has her desk in the family room, mainly due to space in her room but also to help her not lock herself away. She just finished tidying it and I love how it represents where she is at. Lots of art, Lego still displayed proudly, pillow on chair covering her phone ( she is still adhering to the no phone in her room rule, yay!), pottery on display. A beautiful blend of child and teenager!
