Broken Arm

Last week we had Chad's family over for dinner. Grace and the twins were playing in the garden when I heard a scream and yelling. I lept up and ran down the stairs to find Grace screaming and lying on the ground outside the trampoline.

We got her standing and she was cradling her arm. As everyone crowded around, I took her to our room and Chad made sure we had space. She settled and said her aim was really hurting. I knew we had to go to A&E and so Chad farewelled everyone and we hoped in the car and raced to the local centre. It was 7.45 and the centre stops accepting patients at 8pm so we were happy to get in before the cut-off. Unfortunately, the X Ray office had closed early so we had no choice but to go to Middlemore. Took until midnight to get the cast on, a long time for a wee girl in pain. I was so glad I had the foresight to grab some pamol to give her as we went into Middlemore so the pain had eased a bit.

Grace was amazing, she teared up at times but was so brave and strong. She said she wasn't too scared as she had been through it before. Chad was awesome too - we were such a great team and I love how we supported me and as a family how we dealt with the stress.

She has been great with the cast over the past week, it is really heavy but she has managed. We go back to the hospital this week to either get the cast off (the swelling made them assume it is a break but it might actually be just a really bad bruising).

Mean while I am also a bit broken, trying not to think too far ahead and keep busy on small tangible things that keep my brain busy. I am fine, going to doctor next week to see if I should update my medications as all this mental gymnastics makes me so tired. But I am loved and supported and in times of stress, I know I have lots of people who have my back and will support me.

Everyone is growing up

Turning 50 is a weird milestone - I dont feel 50, and I dont really put a lot of weight behind milestone numbers. But I do like reflecting on life, and I feel I have grown, learnt from many of my mistakes, and lived a pretty great life. The biggest change is watching just how much Grace has grown this year. Today I washed some of her baby clothes that I found so I can store them and it took me right back to when my whole clothes line had tiny little outfits on it. This year, she everything has changed and I am in so much grief for the loss of some of the old routines, it hurts!!  She is still my little button and I see that side of her when she is unsure or overwhelmed. I need to manage my patience through these growing phases, as my sister said "give her space and grace". She is the kindest, funniest and sweetest girl and I love her so much that it honestly hurts. I hope she knows that. She seems to have all my worst moments front of mind that I wonder at times if she sees ...

Picture of an 11 year olds desk

Grace has her desk in the family room, mainly due to space in her room but also to help her not lock herself away. She just finished tidying it and I love how it represents where she is at. Lots of art, Lego still displayed proudly, pillow on chair covering her phone ( she is still adhering to the no phone in her room rule, yay!), pottery on display. A beautiful blend of child and teenager!
